Navtoran Temple
Khor village is situated between Jawad and Nayagaon. Where the “Navtoran Temple” is built. Khor is considered to be a Guhil era settlement. Many ancient historical monuments of the village are standing in a dilapidated state, enduring the natural rage of heat, cold and rain, hiding their ancient history in their hollow bones. It is said that the ‘Navtoran Temple’ was built by the king here in memory of the marriage of his nine daughters.
This is a wonderful example of architecture. The beauty, balance and vigor of the statues carved on it are living examples of sculpture. They throw full light on the social life of the medieval period. Many statues have been collected from nearby areas in the middle of this ‘Navtoran Temple’, in which the grand statue of Varah is prominent. Many stone wells are scattered here and there in Khor village itself, which gives the impression that Khor was once a big settlement. Today, the architectural splendor of Khor is limited only to the Navtoran Temple. It is natural that the splendor of the artworks lying deserted for the last many years is limited. This is an unparalleled example of the artistic ingenuity of the 12th and 13th centuries. Their inlay work and the way of expressing subtle emotions is very beautiful.
The artists have breathed life into the stones used in the ‘Navtorana’. Various types of dance postures are clearly visible. The statues of the Ganas expressing devotion are soul-stirring. The Navtorana temple is an important relic of the 12th century. It is built with ten decorative arches arranged in two rows. One of these rows is in length and the other in width and it cuts each other in the center. These are based on pairs of pillars in the assembly hall and the semi-mandap. This temple is decorated with leaf-shaped border makara faces and garlands etc.
